In keeping with the spirit of philanthropic work it does, the Chinmaya Mission started Jagriti in the premises of the Chinmaya Vidyalaya, New Delhi in the year 2008 and has been running for five successful years now. It is a remedial school for students belonging to the economically weaker sections of the society. These students are first generation learners and require support to be at par with their peers. Jagriti functions on all weekdays from Monday to Friday with a team of experienced and dedicated teachers committed to making a difference in the lives of these children. The children and teachers share a simple, wholesome meal before they start their classes in small groups. In order to ensure that these children keep up with the prescribed school curriculum, it is extremely necessary to constantly, repeat and revise what they learn in the mainstream school. Thus, we use these hours spent in Jagriti in re-caping the work that is being done in school, making sure that they have grasped basic concepts and aiding them with their homework. During the process, we lay significant stress on enhancing their communicative skills by encouraging them to think aloud and converse with their teachers and their classmates in English. Apart from paying attention to academics, Jagriti also develops their spiritual growth.

Teachers also guide these children for overall development of the children and good behavioural traits, thus helping them to live in harmony with each other and develop the correct values and ideals required to be a good citizen. Jagriti started in a small way with 40 children and five teachers with gracious donors helping in every possible way. Today, it reaches out to almost 100 children with 10 teachers, and is a project of the Vidyalaya. Our future aim pictures the children of Jagriti as independent learners who no longer need special classes to be at par with the class. The confidence that they will develop while being in Jagriti will instill a desire to do even better and excel in every possible field of education and bring laurels to Chinmaya Vidyalaya. Our aim is also to instill in them the need to pass on the knowledge and values they imbibed in the growing years of their lives. Our endeavour is to make them fluent speakers of English so that even more opportunities are open to them. Our teaching should be such that their mental faculties develop enough to be able to approach and solve matters beyond academic approach. Jagriti should be the stepping stone to success for these first generation learners.
